Bishop Auckland Cricket Club was formed in 1853, but some earlier records show Bishop Auckland played before this date against local village teams, usually for wagers.

In 1856 the village of Bishop Auckland was growing; past history mentions cricket being played on South Church Road.

Then Bishops slowly edged its way along South Church Road playing on wastelands and playing fields eventually playing on the land King James School now stands. Then in 1908 the original lease was drawn up with the church institute and football club for a term of 999 years to play on the present ground Kingsway.

Bishop Auckland applied to the NYSD league in 1904 and were refused, eventually being accepted in 1905 for the 1906 season of which there were 11 teams.
