BACC 3XI entertained highflying Barnard Castle 3XI, who were invited to bat first on a cold overcast day at Kingsway. As always regular opening partnership David Robinson and Omawale Hinds steamed in presenting both openers with difficulties with each batter surviving due to dropped catches. This proved extremely costly with Max Martin (104) going on to make his second century of the season and captain Joe Toulson reaching 112 not out with some ferocious hitting for an impressive third century this season totalling 641 runs. This onslaught enabled Barnard Castle to reach 299-2 in their 40 overs.
The interval message to Bishops was simple capitulate or compete. The 3rds with the unusual opening partnership of Mike Sowerby and Paul Imerson took the challenge to the buoyant Barnard Castle opening new ball attack frustrating the visitors for twelve overs. The introduction of slow bowler Sam Barnard led to the wickets of Imerson and Sowerby. However this brought the ever consistent David Robinson and exuberant Omawale Hinds to the crease. The hardy souls who braved the arctic conditions were royally entertained this Platinum Jubilee week with Hinds smashing the ball to every corner of the field with spectators taking evasive action for self-preservation. Hinds hit his maiden club half century reaching 59 with 7(4s) and 3 maximums before losing his wicket. Robinson reached an eloquent 49 (6x4s) who was also bowled out. With the next three batters failing to reach double figures each falling to debatable umpiring decisions, the pressure was building. Barnard Castle saw victory in sight but the youthful Ethan Dowson and Joe MacLeod rose to the challenge denying Barnard Castle victory batting out the remaining overs taking Bishops to 160-7 for a highly commendable draw.
Some special mentions Ethan Dowson fielded with total enthusiasm throughout had his best bowling spell this season then saved the game with mature batting. Aidan Usher-Shapley playing his first senior game after only two junior matches covered acres in the field and maintaining excellent concentration throughout. As always Barry Robinson stepping in at the last moment to ensure we had a full complement, James Harris playing a full part despite severe tonsillitis. Stu Hill showing a willingness to go and fetch his gear if we were going to be short. With that level of commitment the club is truly moving forward and the third team establishing its own identity.
